Courier News Boys Tennis coach of Year: Erik Tavel of Montgomery

By

Erik Tavel was a tennis teaching professional for 15 years at various area clubs before he landed his coaching job at Montgomery High School in 2011.

This season, the Cougars went 19-1, edged Ridge (3-2) to capture the Somerset County Tournament title, snagged both the Central Group IV championship and the Skyland Conference Delaware Division crown.

For his leadership of the Montgomery boys tennis team, Tavel is the Courier News Coach of the Year.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our team,” Tavel said. “They took it as far as they could this year. Our success showed us that we do belong at the top of the state, and that we do have a legitimate shot at a state title in the future. I’m very excited about the possibilities.”

Tavel said he’s inspired by his squad’s grit.

“My proudest moment this year was our come-from-behind victory against West Windsor South in the sectional final,” Tavel continued. “Our kids never gave up on themselves or each other, and that’s what pulled us through. The look on their faces when we secured the win was priceless — it will be something I will never forget.”

Though he’s graduating three seniors, Tavel’s expectations remain high.

“Our goal for next year is to make it to the T of C, win the state title and be ranked No. 1,” he added.
