The Salinas High girls basketball team improved to 2-0 by defeating Gonzales 52-26 on Monday night in south Salinas.
The Cowboys allowed 11 first-half points and took a 27-point lead into the break.
Mariah Smith had 12 points to lead Salinas. Daniella Villegas scored eight points, and Marissa Hernandez had eight points and 12 rebounds.
Salinas returns to action Thursday when it faces Aptos in the first round of the Alisal Winter Jam Tournament.
Soledad 40, North Monterey County 34: At North Monterey County, the Aztecs pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat the host Condors.
With the win, Soledad improved to 2-2 on the season.
The Aztecs’ Ilyanna Hendricks scored eight points and had 15 rebounds. Mega Paraguya had 14 points. Christina Vera scored seven points and was praised for her defense.
Soledad led 25-23 at the end of three and used a 15-point fourth quarter to get the victory. The team went 14-for-18 from the free-throw line.
Soledad tries to move above .500 today against Monterey.
Alvarez 58, Harbor 24: At Santa Cruz, the Eagles notched their first win of the season by routing the Pirates.
Ana Ceja scored 10 points to lead Alvarez, while Deaysia Gamble and Crissy Almorade had nine points each.
Alvarez (1-1) plays in the Stevenson Tournament on Thursday.
Soledad 53, Overfelt 47: At Soledad, the Aztecs picked up their first win of the season on Saturday against a San Jose squad.
Meg Paraguya had 18 points to lead the Aztecs (1-2). Luzz Bugarin had 14 points. Ilyanna Hendricks had 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Santa Cruz 62, Santa Catalina 36: At the Gilroy Mustang Classic, the Cougars were downed by the defending tournament champion Cardinals in the finals on Saturday.
Kylie Moses had 13 points, Audrey Bennett had eight steals and Mikayla Rivera had six steals and five rebounds.
Santa Catalina (2-1) returns to action at North Salinas on Wednesday.
Peninsula Tournament: Alvarez’s Ezekiel Cobos took second place in the 120-pound division and was the team’s highest finisher of any weight class.
Cobos went 3-1, getting two victories by decision.
Juan Rios went 2-2 in the 170-pound division and finished in fourth place.
He earned a pin in his first match played.
Joel Castillo (220) and Angel Vasquez (152) each went 3-2 to take sixth place in their own division.
Taz and Fifth Lady Royals Tournament: Notre Dame’s Jenna Garcia went 3-0 in the weekend tournament, getting two pins.
In her final match of the day, Garcia defeated Milpitas’ Mabel Len 7-2.
Alvarez’s Juan Manzano and Angel Jimenez each took first place in their division, going 4-0.
Manzano won the 220-pound division, defeating Gilroy’s Michael Lasquete 5-2 in the finals. Jimenez tallied three pins and then defeated St. Francis Mountain View’s Ryan Chen 13-2 in the finals to win the 138-pound division.
Fernando Hernandez (138), Brooke Lacuata (106) and Carlos Madrigal (113) all got to the grand finals in their own division and eventually took second place.
Alisal 1, North Salinas 0: At Alisal, the Trojans tallied a goal in the 55th minute to defeat the Vikings.
With the win, Alisal improved to 4-0 on the season.
Alisal’s Brianna Aguilar notched the lone score.
The Trojans did their best to extend the lead, but three shots on goal hit the crossbar.
North Salinas goalkeeper Samantha Vargas made 12 saves.
North Salinas next plays host to Christopher today. Alisal plays host to King City on Friday night.
San Lorenzo Valley 8, Seaside 0: At Seaside, the Spartans were unable to score against the Cougars from Felton.
Jessica Mittelbusher scored five goals for SLV.
Seaside faces neighbor Marina on Wednesday.
Monterey 1, Watsonville 1: At the Watsonville Tournament on Saturday, the Toreadores got a goal from Aida Mora to pull even with the Wildcatz.
Gabby Unowitz assisted on Mora’s goal. Goalkeeper Tania Arellano made 12 saves.
Monterey (0-2-1) returns to action today at home against Carmel.
