Cowboys temper Spirits, 3-1

Some players just have a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

Salinas High girls soccer player Valeria Tellez is wasting any time letting that be known.

The freshman recorded a first-half hat trick, helping the Cowboys post a 3-1 non-league victory Monday over rival Notre Dame at the Salinas High Stadium.

Tellez scored goals in the 17th, 21st and 38th minute to give Salinas (3-1-3 overall) a 3-0 halftime lead.

Her first goal game on a nice drop off pass from junior Alicia Cuevas and her second goal was set up by freshman Aly Tyndall. Tyndall got her head on a Notre Dame clear, sending the ball ahead to Tellez who beat a defender and scored the one-on-one goal.

Her final goal came with just two minutes left in the half. A free kick by sophomore Ashley Tibbs deflected off the Notre Dame goalkeeper and came right to Tellez at the goal-line.

Notre Dame (5-4) got back into the game quickly in the second half when Marianna Burns scored off a free kick from 25 yards out in the 42nd minute.

With 14 minutes remaining, the Spirits got off a long shot that went wide left and with two minutes to play Alex Lathos fired in a long shot that was saved by Salinas goalkeeper Sophia Tellez. Tellez finished with four saves and Xochitl Camacho Lopez had two for Salinas. Notre Dame goalkeeper Ali Maestri recorded six saves.
