Crestview continued to take care of business this year, repeating as sectional champions at the Division III sectional at Valley View Golf Course on Thursday. The reigning state champions took first with a score of 305, followed by New London (344) and Hopewell-Loudon (347).
“It’s one 18-hole match at a time,” Crestview coach Bob Olewiler said. “Our first goal was to be undefeated in the Firelands Conference, which happened, and then our second was to repeat as sectional champions, and now we’ve got to punch the state ticket. To go up there and stumble now would not be satisfactory.”
The Cougars were led by Josh Brooks, the overall medalist, shooting a 69. Bryce Lutz finished with a 79, Benjamin Olewiler had a 79 and Michael Staniford shot an 80.
“We have a lot of work to do as a team and individually,” Brooks said. “We just need to keep our heads focused and not get big heads, and keep working on our game.”
Crestview has high hopes of defending its state title, but understands a solid performance at the district match is a must in order to get one step closer to accomplishing its ultimate goal. Last year, the Cougars were the final team to make it out of their district, stepping it up a notch at state competition.
“We want to win, but we have to make sure we get there first,” Brooks said. “And then we are focused on winning.”
Wynford senior Nathan Smith qualified as the top individual, shooting an 80 and the Royals missed out on a trip as a team by four strokes, with a score of 351. Buckeye Central senior Adam McGinnis also made the cut with an 83.
“I know Nate really well,” McGinnis said. “We’ve played together the last couple of years and I’ve gotten to know him pretty good, and I’m definitely glad he got out as well. It will be fun to go out there and play against each other.”
The district tournament will take place Thursday, Oct. 3, at Stone Ridge Golf Course.
