Karissa and Ryan Schweizer share a family trait — the ability to run long distances.
The West Des Moines Dowling Catholic siblings each won their respective races in Thursday’s CIC Conference championships at Ames.
Ryan, a sophomore, took the boys’ title. He won in 15:58, topping West Des Moines Valley’s Daniel Soto, who ran 16:06 on the Iowa State cross country course.
Karissa, a senior, took the girls’ title in 14:15. Johnston’s Jordyn Kleve was the runner-up in 14:32.
The Schweizers are one of Iowa’s best-known cross country families. Their parents were runners and grandpa Frank Schweizer is a former Dowling coach.
Johnston took the boys’ title with 45 points. Ames finished second at 74 and Waukee was third with 78.
Dowling captured the girls’ team crown with 67 points. Second place Ames had 74 and Johnston scored 75.
