Cross country: Waupun's Kuik leads area runners at Mayville

Seven area cross country teams participated in the 33-team Mayville invitational Friday, with Waupun highlighting the local boys effort as Matt Kuik’s first-place finish carried the boys to a fifth place finish while the girls placed seventh.

Kuik ran a 16:50 for the Warriors, defeating second-place Ryan Gurgel of Kettle Moraine Lutheran who ran a time of 17:13.

Warriors’ Bryan Verheyen was next in line with a third place finish with a time of 17:24 while Bryce Buchda cracked the top 10 with a sixth place finish at 17:42.

Campbellsport’s boys finished just ahead of Waupun at fourth place with 175 points, while Laconia finished sixth. Other area team results included St. Mary’s Springs in 13th, Mayville 15th, Lomira 18th and North Fond du Lac/Oakfield in 28th.

Andrew Skiff led the way for the Ledgers, finishing eighth with a time of 17:49. Campbellsport had two top-25 finishers in Sam Candee (12th) and Casey Ruplinger (25th). Candee ran in 18 minutes flat while Ruplinger ran a 18:41.

Other area boy runners that finished in the top-25 include NFDL/O’s Ryan Easterson who finished 18th with a 18:30 and Laconia’s Matt Kastein, who finished 22nd with a 18:31.

On the girls’ side, Springs led the way with a fourth place finish after Liz Bohn finished runner-up with a 15:22. Paige Case wasn’t too far behind Bohn as she finished 14th.

Laconia’s Hailey Isaac had another strong race, finishing sixth overall with a time of 16:20 to help Laconia finish 12th as a team. Other area teams included Waupun taking seventh, Lomira 10th, Mayville 11th and Campbellsport 21st.

Hannah Smith led Waupun with a 10th place finish while Brianna Falk finished 15th for Lomira with a 16:53.
