Daily Dose with Akigbogun

Regis Jesuit (Aurora, Colo.) forward DianiAkigbogun, a 6-foot-1 senior, is no stranger to the gym – not even at midnight, when she ventures to a 24-hour studio to work on ball handling, shooting and post moves before running two miles on a treadmill – a pre-game ritual she adopted during her junior season.

“It’s changed my game and improved my perimeter skills,” said Akigbogun, who averaged 13.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game this past season.

Akigbogun’s refined skills didn’t go unnoticed last season, when The Denver Post named her “Ms. Colorado Basketball” after she helped lead the Raiders to the 5A state championship.

And aside from midnight workouts, there’s more to Akigbogun’s pre-game routine. The future Texas Longhorn told us all about it.

Midnight gym time…

Akigbogun: It helps me sleep, and I always feel a lot more accomplished when I workout. I’m doing it for a purpose. If I want to be successful, I have to work as hard as I possibly can. Usually my mom will workout with me. I try to go three times a week.

Akigbogun: I like to wear black socks when I play. I have a pair that I wore all summer, and one sock has a hole at the bottom. Also, I always wear my hair in a ponytail with a black headband. I can’t play with a bun – I feel weird.

Pre-game Fueling…

Akigbogun: I can’t get any food down when I’m excited to play. So I don’t really eat right before because I always think I’ll get sick.

Pump-up songs…

Akigbogun: I listen to “We Own It” by 2 Chainz and Wiz Khalifa. It’s a song from The Fast and the Furious. I always listen to “I Believe I Can Fly” by R. Kelly. I play this one last. It reminds me of Michael Jordan, and who doesn’t want to think of Michael Jordan before you play a game?

Always in her gym bag…

Akigbogun: I keep it simple: my warm-up suit and my shoes. Knowing the way I get before a game – I get anxious – I’ll forget something at home.
