Southwest Florida Christian scored two defensive touchdowns and added two others on the way to a 29-0 victory over Gateway Charter on Saturday afternoon.
Noah Huxley scored the two defensive touchdowns for the Kings. The first came on a blocked punt in the first quarter. Gateway was lined up to punt deep in their end zone. The punt was blocked and Huxley fell on it for the score. The second came on the first play of the fourth in the same end zone. Griffin quarterback Rondelle Tape was rolling right in his own end zone. He tried to lob a pass on the flat to his running back, but Huxley was right there to intercept the pass, and was already in the end zone for the touchdown.
“I was excited to score,” said Huxley, “but I knew we had more to do.”
“We’ve been waiting for over two years for a defensive score, and we got two tonight.” said SFCA head coach Mark Ackerman.
The King’s quarterback Terrance de Avila accounted for the other two scores for SFCA. He had runs of one and 15 and yards.
“When we first got here as coach (three years ago), anytime we won it was great. But this season is not just about this week. We should be happy with a ‘W,’ but we’ve got work to do,” said Ackerman.
Gateway’s defense played well. But their offense had difficulty penetrating the Kings defense. The Griffins were held to just 59 yards in total offense.
There were 27 penalties were assessed.
