Senior righty Zack DeLeon pitched a five-hitter Friday and Jon Iaione slugged a solo homer to lead Bernards High School’s baseball team to a 4-1 victory in a North 2 Group II quarterfinal.
Bernards tied a single-season school record with its 22nd win, avenging last year’s sectional final loss at Madison.
DeLeon struck out five and walked two at Diamond Nation where the game was moved because of poor field conditions caused by heavy rain. Senior John Maddaluna scored the first run of the game on a Madison overthrow and also had an RBI. Matt Dean had an RBI single, going 2-for-2 for Bernards.
Nick Lucas had an RBI sacrifice fly to drive in Madison’s only run.
Non-Public A South
Immaculata 5, St. John Vianney 4: Immaculata rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Luke Bonfield’s RBI sacrifice fly scored Drew Rodriguez in the first round of the Non-Public South A tournament at Diamond Nation.
The Spartans (13-11) tied the game on Rodriguez’ RBI bunt single and Brandon Wagner’s RBI single before Bonfield’s sac fly.
Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Wagner was 2-for-3 with a double and James Rice was 2-for-3 with a run.
Senior righty Eric Bateman (5-3) went six innings, allowing two earned runs (two earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Vin Sokalski earned a one-inning save.
Central Group IV
Hunterdon Central 7, West Windsor-Plainsboro South 4: Fourth-seeded Hunterdon Central built an early lead courtesy of a two-run Jeremy Ake homer, then was led by the pitching of senior righty Billy Maier, who threw a complete-game seven-hitter. He fanned seven and allowed one earned run for the Red Devils (19-8), who’ve won 10 straight. The Red Devils will play host to either Marlboro or Monroe in Tuesday’s section semifinals.
North 2 Group I
Harrison 11, Dunellen 10: Top-seeded Dunellen (19-7) scored five runs in the bottom fo the seventh inning, but fell short. Casey Wenzel’s three-run double was the highlight of the inning. Mike DeMaria was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Rian Markus went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Mark Switzer was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Wenzel was 3-for-4 with three RBI.
The game was switched from Dunellen to eighth-seeded Harrison’s field because of poor conditions because of heavy rain. Dunellen maintained home team.
Harrison (13-12) scored five runs in the fifth to wipe out a 4-2 Dunellen lead, then tacked on four more in the sixth.
North 2 Group IV
Perth Amboy 10, Bayonne 0: Fernando Rosa pitched five shutout innings, collecting 10 strikeouts for Perth Amboy (10-13) in a 10-0 baseball victory over Bayonne in the NJSIAA North 2 Group IV quarterfinal on Friday. Senior catcher Josh Batista went 2-for-3, with a triple and two RBI to propel the Panthers. Sophomore first-baseman Alexis Guerra went 2-for-3, with one RBI and two runs scored.
Perth Amboy will face the winner of the Westfield vs. Linden game in Tuesday’s semifinal.
