Brooke Martin scored 21 points to lead the Delton Kellogg High girls’ basketball team to the school’s first-ever MHSAA regional championship on Thursday night via a 49-46 victory over Grandville Calvin Christian in Class C action.
The regional title was, of course, the Panthers’ first in school history as Delton Kellogg made its first-ever regional appearance this week.
With the victory, Delton Kellogg (21-4) advanced to next Tuesday’s Class C quarterfinal at Ithaca against Saginaw Nouvel. Game time is 7 p.m.
“It was a tight, back-and-forth game most of the night, with both teams being up by six points at one time or another until we made some free throws at the end to win it,” said Delton Kellogg coach Mike Mohn. “We only went 14 for 27 at the free throw line for the night, but we made the big ones when we needed them.”
Mohn added that he was very proud of his Panthers’ efforts.
“I’m very excited for this group,” he said. “They’re a great group of kids, they just keep plugging along … and I’m proud of these girls and so is the rest of the community.”
Mallory Sewell added 16 points for the Panthers, and Sarah Rendon had six.
Delton Kellogg led 12-10 after one quarter, was down 26-24 at halftime and then was up by a single point, 36-35, heading into the final period.
CLASS D AT HUDSONVILLE
Climax-Scotts 41, Fulton-Middleton 28: Stephanie Cochran had 10 points, including two 3-pointers, to lead a balanced Panther offensive attack as Climax-Scotts won its first regional title since 2003.
With the triumph, C-S (19-5) advanced to next Tuesday’s Class D quarterfinals at Reed City against Gaylord. Game time is 7 p.m.
“Defense is the key to our success — defense wins games, and that’s what we go by all season long — and tonight defense is what it came down to again,” said C-S coach Dana Perrin. “Playing good defense turns into our transition game offensively, so we scored on offense once we got the defensive job done again tonight.”
Also for C-S, Janae Langs had eight points, five assists and four rebounds; Destiny Froberg had seven points and six rebounds; Fallon Froberg had seven points and three rebounds; and Anna Lodes had six points and nine boards.
