Depew stuns Alden to win Section VI Championship

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.- For the second straight night at Ralph Wilson Stadium, a David beat a Goliath. Depew shocks Alden 28-26 to win the Class B Section VI Championship.

Alden entered the game undefeated and poised to make another run at a state title. Depew wanted revenge for multiple defeats over the last two seasons.

In the second quarter, Depew struck first when quarterback Dylan Sekuterski connected with his favorite target Cody Penner for a 10-yard touchdown.

But, Alden responded quickly. Lyle Grant (115 yards rushing) had an electrifying run into Depew territory and the Bulldogs capped the drive with a 19-yard pitch and catch from quarterback Brian Stoldt to receiver Dylan Dussault.

Alden took a 14-7 thanks to 13-yard touchdown pass from Stoldt to Austin Hopcia with 31 seconds left in the first half.

In the second half, the tide changed. Depew scored 21 straight points, including two touchdown passes from Sekuterski.

Alden trailed 28-14 with less than four minutes left in the fourth quarter. Then things got whacky. Stoldt hit Dussault for a 25-yard touchdown, but the extra point was blocked. Depew up 28-20.

Alden recovered the onside kick, marched down field and with 1:32 left, Stoldt found Ryan Richards for the 19-yard score. Alden was forced to go for two but could not convert.

Stoldt completed 19 of 34 for 295 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. His counterpart, Sekuterski, threw for 187 yards and three scores.

Alden racked up 443 yards of offense to Depew’s 287.

Nevertheless, Depew wins a thriller 28-26 and advances to the Far West Regionals.
