Desert Vista, Brophy Prep advance to soccer championship

Phoenix Desert Vista coach Mike Rabasca keeps players from reporters, he said, “because kids say stupid things.”

But his players did all the talking on the field as No.3 seed Desert Vista defeated No.10 seed San Luis 3-1 in the Division I semifinals on Thursday at Campo Verde High in Gilbert.

Desert Vista advances to the championship against Phoenix Brophy, a 3-1 overtime winner against Tolleson, on Saturday at Campo Verde.

Desert Vista’s Nicholas Mangialardi scored his sixth and seventh goals of the playoffs.

“They just outweighed us to a man about 20 pounds,” San Luis coach Ian McDougall said. “But I’m sure if Desert Vista’s players were allowed to talk, they’d agree it was a close, hard-fought match.”

In the late game, which was 1-1 heading into overtime, Brophy senior Riggs Lennon finally broke the tie in the 86th minute and sent his team into the finals. Even though there was still another half of overtime to be played, Brophy fans and players started the celebration.

The goal deflated Tolleson, and Lennon knocked in another goal in the 95th minute to make the final score 3-1.

Neither team could break the opposing defense in the first half, with Brophy coming the closest on a few corners.

Brophy senior Ryan Grotjohn and Tolleson freshman Alexis Coss Y Leon scored in regulation.

A big blow hit Tolleson when starting senior goalie Nike Viscaina was injured late in the second half. His absence hurt in overtime.
