With nine returning players, including five state champions, and back-to-back Division 3 team state championships under its belt, Birmingham Detroit Country Day’s tennis team wants to challenge itself early in the season.

The Yellow Jackets have scheduled Friday and Saturday matches against two of the top programs in Indiana: Park Tudor, ranked No. 3 in the state on Friday at 4:30 p.m., and Indianapolis Brebeuf Jesuit High School, ranked fifth, Saturday at noon. Both matches are in Indianapolis at the respective high schools.

“We had back-to-back state titles and won 39 out of 40 points at the state championship (last year),” said Country Day coach Josh Molino.

Country Day finished 13-0 during the regular season with victories over top-flight schools like Novi, Birmingham Brother Rice, Midland Dow and Ann Arbor Huron.

This year’s team will be led by Rishi Patel, the team’s No. 1 singles player and captain, who won a state title at No. 3 singles in 2012.
