District 3A-6

By

* Teams: Bishop Verot, Sarasota Cardinal Mooney, Sarasota Out of Door Academy * Outlook: After two years of competing in a district full of competitive and larger Lee County teams, the Bishop Verot Vikings return to a northern-oriented district against schools of similar size. The Vikings have a heralded signal caller in junior QB Quinn Farrell, who missed time because of injuries last season but passed for 120 yards in the preseason game against Ida Baker. “We’re working on a lot of pass timing issues that we have had,” Bishop Verot coach Phil Dorn said. “It hasn’t been what we wanted. We wanted to get out Friday night and work on some passing. We threw the ball a lot more than we will in the future. Our running game will be something we will try to use more.” Cardinal Mooney has a much larger offensive line than the Vikings, which puts the Cougars in the driver’s seat for the district crown. Out of Door Academy and Cardinal Mooney each went 5-5 last season. Bishop Verot went 1-9 in playing one of the tougher schedules in Lee County, which might have these Vikings better prepared for this season. Bishop Verot needs only to defeat one of the two district teams for a state playoff berth, facing the Cardinal Mooney at home Nov. 1 and the Thunder on the road Oct. 4. * Predicted order of finish: 1. Cardinal Mooney, 2. Bishop Verot, 3. Out of Door.
