District 4A-6 preview

By

* Teams: Avon Park, Clewiston, LaBelle, Lake Placid * Outlook: Pete Walker, who led Glades Day to three state championships in his 10 seasons at the school, returns to lead his alma mater at Clewiston. He quarterbacked the 1982 Tigers team that shared a state title and previously coached Clewiston for one season, finishing 8-5 in 2002. Walker takes over the program that’s posted losing seasons in four of the past six years, its worst stretch since the 1960s. A weak district means the Tigers will likely make it back to the state playoffs, but it will take Walker a few seasons to construct a roster that could make some noise in the postseason. A four-win season may seem like a modest win total but it marked the Cowboys best finish since 2007. Chris Siner takes over after going 9-21 in three years at Mariner. LaBelle’s strength is a physical offensive line led by FCS recruit Josh Rimes, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound state weightlifting champion. The Cowboys must find a way to generate more points after averaging just 13.5 points per game last season. Jerome Baxter and Danny Robinson will lead a linebacking corps that will be the strength of LaBelle’s defense. Wade Jackson, who has been at Avon Park since 1994 but hasn’t coached in the last couple of years, will run the program. He believes his team can win the district title. Lake Placid opened with an 8-0 loss to Okeechobee in its preseason game. * Predicted order of finish: 1. Clewiston, 2. LaBelle, 3. Avon Park, 4. Lake Placid
