Div. III girls basketball: Holbrook defeats Alchesay

FLAGSTAFF- Britney Baldwin hit five 3-pointers to lead No. 12 Holbrook to a 47-42 victory over No. 5 Whiteriver Alchesay in the second round of the Division III girls basketball state tournament at the Walkup Skydome at Northern Arizona University.

Baldwin’s two 3-pointers and Shandie Demuth’s eight points in the second quarter helped move Holbrook out to a 27-14 lead with 1:21 to go.

“I think my best is six 3-pointers,” Baldwin said. “When I hit those it opens things up a bit for others.”

Those others were Demuth and Tayah Goldtooth, who came in off the bench to score seven points.

The closest Alchesay came in the third quarter was when Lonnell Fall hit her only points of the game, a 3-pointer to pull Alchesay to 31-28 with 2:13 to go. Baldwin’s last 3-pointer put Holbrook (22-2) up 40-29 with 6:41 left in the game.

“When I have one of my games they really start to go in for me,” Baldwin said. “The coaches like me to take those when I am hitting.”

But Alchesay (22-4) closed at the end pulling to 44-42 when Jennie Sanchez sank two free-throws with 28 seconds to go in the game. Holbrook hit three free-throws down the stretch to seal the win.

“It was nerve racking but we managed to pull it out,” Baldwin said. “Our coaches really prepared us for this game.”

Rae Leigh Johnson led Alchesay in scoring with 15 points, while Demuth scored nine points for Holbrook.
