PRESCOTT VALLEY – No. 9 Rock Point advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division IV girls basketball state tournament to face top-seeded Scottsdale Salt River with a 46-41 win over No. 8 Tucson St. Gregory in a second round game at Tim’ Toyota Center.
Freshman Pashen Johnson paced Rock Point with 15 points and Amberlene Begaye added 10. St. Gregory’s Amanda Gomez led all scorers with 16 points.
“We’re mostly seniors and they really pushed themselves to get ot the next level,” Rock Point coach Marlla Begay said. ”Pashen Johnson really stepped up for us.”
Katelynn Harvey scored four points and Athene Hummingbird hit a 3-point shot as Rock Point outscored St. Gregory 14-6 in the second quarter, closing the quarter with a 7-0 run for the game’s biggest lead to that point, 25-18 at the half.
St. Gregory battled back in the third. Jennie Bass scored on consecutive runners and Amanda Gomez scored on a short jumper to cut the Rock Point lead to 27-24, but, again, Rock Point closed strong with two baskets from Begaye and a 3-pointer from Johnson for a 34-25 lead after three quarters.
Hannah Sawyer scored twice in succession on shot jumpers and Gomez hit a 3-pointer with 2:48 to play to cut the Rock Point lead to 42-33.
But Johnson scored off a drive to increase the lead to 44-33 and Rock Point took it home from there.
