Door open for Jalen Ramsey to switch college choice

Brentwood Academy defensive back Jalen Ramsey committed to Southern California in mid-July.

Since then, the Trojans went 7-6, becoming the first team to start a season No. 1 in a Top 25 poll and finish unranked.

USC also has had five commitments in the 2013 class reopen their recruiting.

Where does that leave Ramsey?

He’s not saying. Ramsey turned down an interview request last month and did not return phone calls seeking comment this week.

His father, Lamont Ramsey, said his son’s commitment was firm and that he was taking his official visit this weekend to USC. But he left the door open for a change.

“He’s still committed to USC,” Lamont Ramsey said. “He’s going to weigh his options after he takes all his visits.”

Ramsey has taken four other official visits, going to Florida (Sept. 21), Mississippi State (Nov. 30), Washington (Dec. 7) and Florida State (Jan. 11). Signing day is Feb. 6.

“I think any time you’ve got a kid making visits, it’s going to make you wonder how solid the commitment is,” said Nashville-based recruiting analyst Barton Simmons of “(Ramsey) claims he’s solid, claims he’s not going to budge. But as he continues to make his visits, other coaches are going to think they’ve got a shot.”

Simmons said the top player on The Tennessean Dandy Dozen list of Midstate recruits has the potential to make an immediate impact — with the Trojans or elsewhere.

Ramsey, who is 6-foot, 185 pounds, had 49 total tackles (38 solos) with four tackles for loss, three interceptions and two forced fumbles last season.

“He’s a good fit with regards to being as college-ready as any cornerback in the country,” Simmons said. “He’s a polished kid. He can come in and contribute early. I think, schematically, he’s a good fit for just about any defense.

“The question is, does he want to go that far away from home? Does he want his parents to be able to see him play every weekend? … It sounds great to commit back in the summer, but when it comes time to sign, they start thinking about ‘that is an awfully long way away.”‘
