A pair of Oshkosh West doubles teams posted runner-up finishes as the Wildcats finished a close third at the Fox Valley Association tournament on Thursday.
West entered the tournament in second-place after the dual-meet portion of the season but finished tied for second in the final overall standings with Fond du Lac, who finished four points ahead of the Wildcats at the tournament.
Oshkosh North tied for sixth in the tournament and ended up fifth in the final overall standings.
Leading the way for the Wildcats were the doubles teams of Chris Lightner and Ben Rogers and Adam Hawley and Casey Nelson, who earned runner-up finishes at the No.2 and No. 3 flights, respectively.
Lightner and Rogers needed a third set to post a semifinal win over Fond du Lac’s Mitchell Riley and Rex Whealon to advance to the finals, where they lost to the top-seeded tandem of John Price and Tylor Rosera in straight sets.
Hawley and Nelson posted a perfect win in their first match and scored a straight-set win in the semifinals before dropping the finals match to Alec Becker and Alan Desai of Neenah.
Alex Boettcher at No. 2 singles and Danny Colantonio at No. 4 singles added third-place finishes for the Wildcats, while West’s No. 1 doubles team of Michael Buege and Justin Xie finished fourth.
The Spartans were led by its top flights as both No. 1 singles player Brandon Hamm and the top doubles team of Aron Kumbalek and Cade Francour.
Hamm bounced back from a semifinal loss to Neenah’s Ryan Risgaard to top Kimberly’s Mitchell Sauder 6-3, 6-4 for third place.
Kumbalek and Francour lost a heartbreaker in the semifinals. The duo won the second set in a tiebreaker to force a third-set supertiebreaker, but fell 10-7 to Fond du Lac’s Stuart Nett and Matt Riley.
Kumbalek and Francour rebounded and beat Buege and Xie, 6-3, 6-3 for third.
