Dunellen falls to Point Beach

Point Pleasant Beach 15, Dunellen 6: Tim Francisco’s 1-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter helped the Destroyers trim a 12-0 deficit in half, but Dunellen could get no closer.

After failing to convert on fourth-and-2 from its own 18 yard line, Dunellen turned the ball over on downs with six minutes left. The Garnett Gulls kicked a field goal to produce the final margin.

Point Pleasant Beach built a 12-0 halftime lead on a safety, field goal and touchdown run.

Dunellen scored on its first series of the third quarter. The Destroyers drove to the opposition’s 20-yard line later in the quarter, but turned the ball over on downs.

“The kids played a great defensive game,” Dunellen coach Dave DeNapoli said. “We just made some mental mistakes. It was a tough battle. We didn’t have a great first half, but it was still 12-0 and we came back. We made some adjustments at halftime.”
