Eagles rally to beat Colts


Courtesy runner Mike Diorio scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error as visiting Middletown South took advantage of sloppy defense to score five runs in the top of the sixth inning and defeat Christian Brothers Academy, 5-2, on Friday in a Shore Conference Class A North game.

CBA (2-1, 2-1) is ranked No. 1 in the Asbury Park Press Top 10. Middletown South (2-1, 2-1) is ranked No. 9.

Nick McGann, who started the rally when he was hit by a pitch, scored the first run of the inning on an error on Kyle Brey’s single to right.

An RBI single by winning pitcher Mike Grossi plated Brey with the tying run. Diorio scored when a throw to first sailed into right field in an attempt to throw out Eric Maynes after a wild pitch on a strikeout.

Perry Kulaga scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-2 and Hunter Dreuer capped the rally with an RBI single.

MARLBORO 5, MANALAPAN 4: Adam Ashenfarb’s single to left in the top of the 10th scored Dustin Jensen with the tie-breaking run and Ashenfarb also pitched the final two innings in relief to pick up the win as the Mustangs (2-1, 2-1), who trailed 4-1 after five innings, defeated the No. 5 Braves (1-2, 1-2) in a Class A North game.

Mike Rabinowitz tied the game for Marlboro with a two-out, two-strike RBI single to right center.

James Halasy had a two-run single in a four-run fifth for Manalapan.

HOWELL 17, COLTS NECK 14: Mike Levy went 3-for-4 with five RBI, Jordan Reizer was 4-for-6 with three RBI and scored three runs, and Ryan Wares and Mike Parisi each went 3-for-5 with two RBI as the Rebels (2-1, 2-1) outlasted the No. 7 Cougars (1-2, 1-2) in a Class A North game.

Wares was 8-for-9 this week with three doubles, a triple, a home run and three walks.

Paul Marinello was 3-for-6 with three RBI and Tyler Kay was 3-for-4 with an RBI for Colts Neck.

RUMSON-FH 2, MANASQUAN 1: Morgan Maguire’s two-out double in the top of the ninth scored Max Goione with the go-ahead run as the Bulldogs (1-2, 1-2) defeated the Warriors (0-2, 0-2) in a Class A Central game.

Manasquan pitcher Tommy Toole struck out 11 and pitched a complete-game four-hitter.

RB CATHOLIC 6, SJ VIANNEY 1: Mike Rescigno and relievers Mike Marley and Al Molina combined on a five-hitter and Matt Kurdewon had a two-run double in the third as the No. 3 Caseys (3-0, 3-0) defeated the Lancers (1-2, 1-2) in a Class A Central game and the first regular season game on RBC’s new FieldTurf playing surface.

Rescigno struck out seven, walked one and allowed four hits over the first five innings.

HOLMDEL 17, SHORE 12: Matt Schneiderman went 3-for-3, scored four runs and had four RBI and Joe Sadler was 2-for-4, scored three runs and had an RBI as the Hornets (1-1, 1-1) outslugged the Blue Devils (1-1, 1-1) in a Class A Central game.

Andrew Schulz was 3-for-3, scored four runs and had an RBI for Shore.

MIDD. NORTH 4, FREEHOLD TWP. 2: Richie Palmer’s two-out, two-run double capped a four-run top of the fifth as the Lions (1-2, 1-2) wiped out a 2-0 deficit and defeated the Patriots (2-2, 1-2) in a Class A North game.

WALL 7, OCEAN 1: Junior right-hander Tyler Swiggert pitched three-hit ball over the first six innings to pick up his first varsity win and Dan Wondrack went 2-for-3 with a two-run single in the bottom of the first as the Crimson Knights (2-0, 2-0) defeated the Spartans (2-1, 2-1) in a Class B North game.

MATAWAN 7, FREEHOLD 4: Mike Creamer’s three-run double in the top of the fifth gave the Huskies (2-0, 2-0) a 6-4 lead and Dan Incle went 3-for-3 and scored four runs as Matawan defeated the No. 10 Colonials (1-2, 1-2) in a Class B North game.

TR NORTH 10, JACKSON LIB. 4: Mike Miraglia scored the go-ahead run on a balk in the top of the seventh as the No. 2 Mariners (2-1) scored seven runs in the seventh and defeated the No. 6 Lions (2-1) in a nondivisional game.

POINT BORO 5, RED BANK 3: Dan Gonella’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth broke a 3-3 tie and Kurt Vanbenschoten added an RBI single later in the fifth as the Panthers (2-1) defeated the Bucs (1-2) in a nondivisional game.
