Eight Eastside wrestlers earned championships during the Peach Blossom AAA Region tournament Thursday night at Eastside.
Zane Mitchell (106 pounds), David Walker (113), Cole Anderson (126), Clay Walker (138), Will Thorpe (160), Michael Fernandez (170), Zach Lake (195) and Tre Long (285) placed first for the Eagles.
Blue Ridge’s Jordan Ludd and Jeremy Holbrooks won titles at 120 and 132 pounds, respectively, and Justin Stumbo and Brandon Stumbo of Pickens placed first at 145 and 152, respectively.
Greer’s Darius Newman was the champion at 170, and Greenville’s James Couvillion took first at 220.
* Eastside, No. 1 in Class AAA, will wrestle Lower Richland, and West-Oak will take on Union County in first-round playoff matches at Eastside at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The winners will then square off in a second-round match at Eastside.
The same scenario will take place at Hillcrest, where the two-time defending Class AAAA champion Rams will wrestle Riverside, and Mauldin will take on York in first-round matches at 10 a.m., with the winners then meeting in the second round.
Also Saturday, Greenville will wrestle Dreher at Broome, and Greer will take on host Chapin in first-round AAA matches.
* Former Hillcrest wrestler Michael DeVita coached Hammond School in Columbia to a 53-27 victory over Cardinal Newman Saturday in the South Carolina Independent Schools Association state championship match.
DeVita, who won the Class AAAA 140-pound title as a senior at Hillcrest in 2007, is pursuing his master’s degree in education at the University of South Carolina.
* Another former Hillcrest wrestler, Brieana Delgado, became a two-time All-American during this past weekend’s Women’s College Wrestling Association national championships in Bristol, Tenn.
Delgado, a sophomore, placed third at 123 pounds and helped Oklahoma City University, the four-time defending national champion, to a runner-up finish.
