Eau Claire Memorial 6, Verona 1

Eau Claire Memorial won its first WIAA boys state hockey title since 2008 by defeating Verona in Madison on Saturday.

Dylan Ross scored what proved to the winning goal for Eau Claire at 1:24 of the period, snapping a 1-1 game. Jacob Bresser added a short-handed goal at 14:59 of the period.

The Old Abes broke the game open in the third period with Bresser, Charley Grasskamp and Austin Pippen firing shots that found their way to the back of the net.

Alex Geving had 26 saves for Eau Claire. Alex Jones had 24 saves for Verona.

Girls

Hayward Co-op 5, Onalaska Co-op 2

The Hayward/Northwestern/Spooner Co-op made its first appearance at the state tournament a memorable one by defeating Onalaska/Aquinas/Holmen/West Salem on the strength of a hat trick by Meredith Ingebretson. Holly Turnbull and Annika Neerdaels also scored for Hayward.

Sarah Miley notched 21 saves for Hayward. Jeanalyn Schindler of Onalaska had 20 saves.
