GREENBELT, Md. (WUSA) — Playoff basketball isn’t pretty. It’s brutal. And on Friday night, in front of a cheering home-crowd, Eleanor Roosevelt, fought, dove and attacked the basket to claim the Girls’ Maryland 4A South Region title with a 48-44 win over C.H. Flowers.

“I knew it was going to be an ugly game. We’ve played Flowers three times … We just had to tough it out and that’s what we did,” said head coach Delton Fuller.

Overall, it was a close, scrappy match-up. The Raiders played ferocious defense to hang on to their narrow lead. With just 2:42 on the board, it looked like the Jaguars might inch ahead when Flowers sophomore De’Janae Boykin tied the game at 42-42.

The teams went back and forth, bucket for bucket until the last ten seconds of the game. Sophomore center Tolu Omokore finished the night with 16 points for Roosevelt and Kyah Proctor led Flowers in scoring with 15 points.

Ultimately, Roosevelt senior Daria Simmons sunk two foul shots with just over seven seconds in the game to secure the Raiders’ victory, 48-44.

“We worked so hard for this. I didn’t want to let my team down … I took my time and I made both my free-throws,” said Simmons after the game.

Next week, Roosevelt will compete in the Maryland State semifinals at UMBC’s RAC Arena. Check the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association website for schedules.
