Elmira Notre Dame
Class D, Division VII
LAST SEASON: 5-3
The Crusaders will have to wait until Week 2 to get going because they did not have enough eligible players for their scheduled opener against Tioga. Coach Mike D’Aloisio expects to have 18 to 19 players once everyone has enough practices.
“Hopefully the second game and the rest of the season we’ll progress and do what we have to do to win football games,” he said.
Five starters return from last season, including senior running back Tom Agan, who is healthy again after knee injury to repair a torn ACL suffered during basketball season. Agan ran for 847 yards on 115 carries last season, adding another 285 yards on 21 receptions.
“He rehabbed the heck out of it,” D’Aloisio said. “I don’t know if Adrian Peterson worked harder than he did. He looks good. No ill effects that I notice.”
The other returning starters are senior quarterback Hunter Thomas, senior receiver Derek Marshall, and senior two-way linemen Eric Brennan and Rob Johnson.
“Our offensive line is depleted a little bit,” D’Aloisio said. “We do have skilled people and we’ve got to get the ball to our skilled people in space and let them make plays for us.”
In addition to having low numbers, several of those players are new to varsity football.
“We’re a work in progress and I want to see that progress carried over to the field every single night,” D’Aloisio said. “We need to get better. We need to start playing Notre Dame football and keep up the tradition here.
“We’ve got some young guys, but they’re doing better and I think they’re finally starting to pick up the system a bit.”
