Zeeland, Mich. (WZZM) The Zeeland West Dux will be among the favorites to win the O-K Green football title in 2013. Football fans in Zeeland should get an early feel for just how good this team is.

The Dux open with last year’s state runners-up in division four, Detroit Country Day, which features some major college football talent. “They have three guys in the skill positions,” says head coach John Shillito. “A wide receiver who’s committed to Michigan, a quarterback who’s committed to Rutgers and a tailback who’s committed to Boston College. So we’re going to play against some really good athletes.”

It’s a road game for the Dux. But Shillito doesn’t want to shy away from challenging his team. “Even the trip itself is a challenge in terms of growing up and the maturing process.”

Shillito has a team that already is seasoned. The Dux went 7-4 with a second-round playoff appearance last year following an unbeaten state championship season in 2011. Shillito says he returns five starters on offense and four on defense including a likely all-conference tight end in senior Jordan VanDort. “We’ve been running this (system) since we were in middle school,” VanDort told WZZM. “We always have someone behind the group of seniors who’s ready to go and ready to prosper too.”

The schedule will test the Dux all season. They face rival Zeeland East in week two before conference play begins. Four of the six teams in the O-K Green qualified for the state playoffs a year ago and the league figures to be strong from top to bottom again.

Follow the Dux and all the West Michigan teams all season long on WZZM’s “13 On Your Sidelines” with Tom Clyde, Dan Harland and Brent Ashcroft Friday nights at 11:15.
