The Hillcrest Hornets took a 9-0 lead in the second first-round game today at the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions.

But it would not last long as Fairfax (Va.) Paul VI ran away with a 69-49 victory to move to Friday’s semifinals against Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco.

Franklin Howard had 15 points to lead Paul VI (11-4), and Kevin Dorsey added 14. Howard is a highly touted sophomore, but stud sophomore Marcus Derrickson was held to four points.

The much bigger Paul VI outrebounded Hillcrest 38-16, outscoring the Hornets 41-17 in the middle two quarters.

Thomas Whittaker scored 14 points to pace Hillcrest, which will play a consolation game against Plano (Texas) Prestonwood on Friday.
