Fond du Lac 15, Oshkosh 0

The Fond du Lac Stoutmen high school boys rugby team raised its record to 4-1-1 Monday evening after defeating the Oshkosh Pigs at the rugby fields at UW-Fond du Lac.

Andy Johnston scored the first try at the 10-minute mark off a quick pick-and-go. Jason Winkelman scored a try seven minutes later on a strong 25-meter run. However, Fondy was not able to capitalize on a strong wind advantage for the remainder of the first half.

Oshkosh repeatedly kicked for field position effectively in the second half, but the Stoutmen were able to battle back a few times, with Justin Thill breaking through and scoring a try at the 41-minute mark. Oshkosh controlled field position the remainding 19 minutes, but the Stoutmen’s defense held strong, capped off by saving tackles by Eric Fritch and Jake Hawley at the very end.

The Stoutmen face the 5-1 Valley Crusaders this Friday in their final regular season match this at Memorial Park in Neenah. A Fond du Lac victory would secure a second place finish in the division behind Pulaski. A loss will then come down to tie-breaker criteria with DePere to determine placing for third and fourth place.
