Monica Smith scored a hat trick in the first half on assists from three different Pine Plains field hockey teammates as the Bombers defeated Onteora High School 3-1 at home on Wednesday.
“Monica Smith on fire again,” Pine Plains coach Debbie Beam said. “Monica plays all year. She’s moving the ball well. Her stickwork is excellent. She’s having those opportunities to get through the defense. She’s matured as a player. People are passing to her too and setting her up quite well.”
After Emma Nagle opened the scoring for Onteora, Smith scored on an assist from Abigail Arsenault 11:52 into the game to tie the score. Smith scored on an assist from Rachel Beam 22:01 in, and then connected on a Megan Proper pass with 39 seconds left in the half. The teams were scoreless in the second half.
“The game was fast and it was hot,” Beam said. “We took advantage of being on our home field with our speed. In the second half, Onteora played quite well.”
Gabby Latendorf made nine saves for Pine Plains (6-2). Cassidy Dickman also made nine saves for Onteora (5-2).
