The Pine Plains field hockey team will play for the Section 9 Class C championship on Wednesday, after defeating Webutuck High School on Monday, 2-0, at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome in Milton.
The top-seeded Bombers will play No. 2 Onteora at the Sports Dome at 6 p.m. Pine Plains won the teams’ previous meeting this season, 3-1.
“They’ve seen us already and we’ve seen them. Both teams have made adjustments,” Pine Plains coach Debbie Beam said. “They want us. It’s a team of all seniors. Keeping my guys on top of their edge is very difficult because we beat these guys. You can never underestimate your opponent.”
Case in point, Beam said, was the fourth-seeded Warriors of Webutuck.
“They really improved. For a young team they really looked good (Monday).”
Monica Smith put the Bombers on the board with 64 seconds left in the first half off a Tiffany McMahon pass. Smith then provided an insurance goal 2:11 into the second half, this time off a Kaitlin Croghan assist.
Gabby Latendorf made three saves for the Bombers (11-4), while Sophia Tomasetti made six saves for Webutuck.
Beam also praised Nicole Reilly who “really picked it up for us on the right side of the field and really generated our attack.”
