Transferring from West High to Solon after his freshman year was one of the best things that could have happened to Connor Fitzpatrick, he said.

“When my parents moved to Solon, it turned out to be a blessing, living in the Solon community with all of the opportunities offered,” the recent graduate said. “I was unable to play baseball at West but I was able to do baseball, cross country and track (at Solon).”

Fitzpatrick has carried his weight for the team, and it has shown. He earned the Hardest Working Player award last fall as well as the off-season lifting award. He also received the Bernie Saggau Award, which recognizes strong sportsmanship and character both on and off the field.

Fitzpatrick’s hard work has paid off and this fall he will attend Luther College and continue to play baseball.

“I got a spot on the baseball team and I’m very excited about that,” Fitzpatrick said. “I want to play catcher, but I will go wherever the team needs me.”

Despite growing up in the Iowa City area, Fitzpatrick is a Cyclone fan. Both of his parents attended Iowa State.

But Fitzpatrick said that the University of Iowa is a likely choice when he finishes his undergraduate studies at Luther.

“Iowa would be at the top of my list for grad school because they have a great program,” Fitzpatrick said. “I wanted to have my own college experience for undergrad, but by the time I’m 22 or 23 I could move back to Iowa City to do med school or grad school here.”

Connor Fitzpatrick is this week’s Hotshot:

If you could visit any place in the world, it would be: Colorado.

My biggest asset to the team: I pride myself on always hustling and trying to lead by example.

My most prized possession is: My phone.

My superstitions are: When I’m in the batter’s box, I always look at the bat and take a deep breath to clear my head and get ready for the next pitch.

Best sports experience: When we went to state my sophomore year and I got to play in one inning of the tournament.

A celebrity I resemble is: Joe Mauer. My parents tease me that I look like him because of the hair, but also because he’s a catcher and he’s versatile.

I can’t imagine going a week without: Thepeople around me. My parents primarily but also my brother and girlfriend.

My team/personal goals for the season are: To help the team get back to state, but also to continue improving my hitting. I’m currently batting .333 and I want to get to .400 by the end of the season.

My favorite –

Pro or college player: Yadier Molina, St. Louis Cardinals catcher.

Pro or college team: St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa State Cyclones.

Class: Biology or chemistry.

Food: Spaghetti.

Color: Red or blue, depends on the shade.

Movie: “Forrest Gump.”

TV Show: “Family Guy.”

Actor: Tom Hanks.

Words to live by: “Hustle and give it your all while on the field.”
