Five wrestlers advance to state semis

By

Five of the 32 high school wrestlers from Brevard County won their first two matches on Friday, advancing to today’s state semifinals at The Lakeland Center in Lakeland.
Joey Miuccio, now 41-0, led the pack at 138 pounds in Class 2A, along with Palm Bay’s 145-pound Steven VonNiederhausern. Less expected in 2A was Bayside’s Tomell One, who is still in the championship bracket as a heavyweight. Class 1A semifinalists are Matthew Seymour (132 pounds) of Titusville and Jonathan Pickens (160) of Astronaut.

Fifteen locals won their opening matches on Friday in the double-elimination tournament. The top six in each weight class will win a medal, and the championship finals are tentatively scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today.
Of the original 32, 10 exited the tournament with an 0-2 mark.
At 182 pounds in Class 1A, Matt Lorenzi of Space Coast lost his opener but bounced back with a first-round win in consolation. Viera’s Hunter Waite did the same at 132 in 3A. In 2A, similar quick rebounds were made by Nick Velasquez of Bayside at 120, Melbourne’s Matt Fields (195) and three Heritage wrestlers: Jeffrey Bayonne at 126, Casey Malloy (152) and Darien Hall (220).
