Dixie High started the softball weekend strong with a convincing , 10-2 win over North Sanpete in the Sunroc Tournament.

The Flyers started out hot, piling up four runs in the first inning, and by the fourth, their lead was 9-0 with the mercy rule looming. In the bottom of the fourth, however, the Hawks, who had only gotten one hit through the first three innings, started to get the better of Flyer pitcher Alisi Fakahua.

“I think they saw that mercy rule coming and decided they weren’t going to quit, and they went and got some runs,” said Dixie coach Dave Demas, “North Sanpete isn’t an easy, pushover team — they’re a tough team, and they can come after it pretty well.”

In the fourth, the Hawks scored two runs on four quick hits, and the momentum had visibly shifted in their favor. With only one out, and a Hawk runner in scoring position, Fakahua struck out one batter, and, after another runner was caught stealing, the Flyers escaped the inning.

“Coach always says go for ’em. Get ahead early and go for ’em,” said Fakahua.

The Hawks changed pitchers to open the fifth, which disrupted the Flyers offense to the point that they got only one more hit in the last three innings.

Though they remained quiet on offense, the Flyers defense locked things down to keep the Hawks off the board and finish the game on top.

“I think when we got ahead by so much, we thought we could go out all nonchalant, but we almost let them back in it. But our team is really good at picking each other up, so we got back into it and got over our lack of focus,” said Dixie’s Stacia Gelter.

The Sunroc Tournament continues through Saturday evening.
