Fondy 5, Houghton 4 (ot)
Houghton scored with 22 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but Fondy ended it 3:37 into the extra 8-minute period on an Ian Tess-Wanat goal for the win in Michigan.
“We had a penalty at the end of regulation when we were up 4-3 hanging on,” said Fondy coach Ryan Sarazin. “They were able to get the goal with the goalie pull.”
Houghton is ranked seventh in Michigan.
Fondy led by two goals in the third period, but Houghton (10-3) battled back. The undefeated Cardinals (14-0) got the game winner when Jack Nejedlo fired the puck in at the net from the corner. Tess-Wanat tipped it, then whacked the puck again, by the Houghton goalie.
“We tried to simplify things in the overtime,” Sarazin said. “Jack just turned, and instead of messing around with it put it right in to the net.
“The guys did a great job; we had a number of chances in the overtime after they dominated at the end of the (third) period.”
Michael Wilson scored Fondy’s first goal in the first period and the score was 1-1 after the opening period. Kyle Dunn had the lone Fondy goal in the second period, and the game went tied 2-2 into the third.
Tess-Wanat had his first goal of the game at 3:18 in the third, then Wilson scored off a Nejedlo feed at 7:20 to give Fondy a 4-2 lead. Houghton scored at 8:11, then again at 16:38 to tie it up in the final seconds.
“This is my hometown up here, so it was really neat to bring the team up here, and for them to play so well,” Sarazin said. “They’re one of the top teams in the state of Michigan, and it was a good test for us.”
Fondy plays again at 1 p.m. today in Michigan against Hancock High School.
