Coming off a second-place showing at the Fox Valley Association tournament, the Fond du Lac tennis team had another good outing Tuesday at a division 1 sub-sectional at the Fox Cities Racquet Club, sending six players on to Thursday’s sectional.
The Cardinals advanced all four of its singles players and its No. 1 doubles team, which is the most players they’ve had go to sectionals in coach Kim Evans’ six years with the team.
Neenah is the top seed going into sectionals, while Fond du Lac is tied for second with Manitowac Lincoln.
No. 1 singles player and FVA champion Kyle Dunn had a bye throughout the day to move on, while No. 2 Kenan Saleh, No. 3 Ethan Pieper and No. 4 Matt Schneider each went 2-0.
At No. 1 doubles, the Fondy team of Stuart Nett and Matt Riley rallied in its only match from losing the first set and traling 5-2 in the second to defeat Oshkosh North’s Aron Kumbalek/Cade Francour 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
“Just a huge comeback that gets them into sectionals,” Evans said. “We talked and they listend about the changes we needed to make in that match. I was very proud of them.”
For Dunn, he is likely on a collision course to face West De Pere’s Nick Dykema in the sectional championship at No. 1 singles. Dykema is 24-2 this season and was the state runner-up last year.
Evans said if that matchup happens, the winner is likely guaranteed a top-8 seed at the state tournament.
