Fondy's solid round earns sectional trip

The hardest part for the Fond du Lac golf team may have been the wait.

The Cardinals were in the first wave of teams to finish at the WIAA Division 1 regional golf meet at Westhaven Golf Course on Tuesday afternoon.

That meant the squad had to wait for a couple of hours to see if their 318 was good enough to get the team to sectionals.

“We were pretty confident,” Fond du Lac coach James Flasch said. “We felt pretty good that one team was going to struggle out there on the back nine and fortunately for us it worked out.”

The Cardinals finished one shot ahead of Kaukauna for second place among the eight teams, earning one of the team qualifying spots for next Tuesday’s sectional meet at Pine Hills Country Club near Sheboygan.

Neenah won the regional with a 306, while Oshkosh North grabbed the other team qualifying spot with a 325.

Flasch said the team felt pretty confident entering the regional after shooting a 316 at the Fox Valley Association Meet on Saturday.

“We felt very good with our conference match we played,” Flasch said. “We felt like if we could do it again, we felt we could go on to sectionals. My hats off to the boys. They played well.”

Charlie Blagoue led the Cardinals with a 76, while Marcus Ruch followed with a 77 as both players finished in the top 10.

Fond du Lac’s No. 1 golfer Mitch Cardinal struggled a bit with an 82 to back the two scores in the 70s. That made Ruch’s round — which included birdies on No. 3 and No. 10 — that much more important.

“It did give us a boost,” Flasch said. “Marcus has been right there and today he was able to put it together and give us the 77 that was going to be the backbone because Mitch struggled a little bit today. Marcus picked up a little bit of the slack.”

Joe Wright and Matt Dilling each shot 83s to round out the Fondy golfers.
