Andrew Moesch’s early field goal was just a glimpse of what was to come for the host John Jay High School football team on Saturday.
The senior kicker connected on a 41-yard field goal with 20 seconds remaining, giving the Patriots a 13-10 win in their homecoming game against Clarkstown South.
“It was a great win,” said John Jay head coach Tom O’Hare. “I am very proud of the boys, but we have to continue to get better every day.”
The winning field goal was Moesch’s third game winner of the year and his second field goal of the game, the first coming from about 30 yards.
The Patriots (5-0) took a 10-3 lead in the third quarter when Ryan Schumaker hooked up with Shawn Casey on a 55-yard touchdown pass.
John Jay was unable to hold the seven-point lead, as the Vikings scored late in the fourth, tying the game at 10-10.
John Jay got the ball back with about two minutes to play and was able to get in range for Moesch’s heroic kick.
O’Hare praised his defense.
“They have done a great job all year; they bend, but don’t break,” he said.
