Football: No. 6 Standley Lake too much for No. 5 Montbello

ARVADA – Standley Lake and Montbello both entered the game undefeated and ranked in the top 10, but the Gators were the better team Thursday night, defeating the Warriors 31-21 on homecoming night.

The Montbello defense had trouble stopping Standley Lake early, allowing them to jump out to a 24-7 lead in the first half. The Warriors made adjustments in the second half, only allowing one Gator touchdown and put themselves in position to win the game.

With just under five minutes remaining in the game, Montbello had the ball and was threatening to cut the lead to just three points, until Connor Durant made an unbelievable one handed interception to help secure the win for Standley Lake.

Anthony Moore and John Ruiz-Perez each accounted for two touchdowns on the night for the Gators.

Standley Lake improves to 6-0 on the season and will host Broomfield next on Oct. 11 at 4:00 p.m., while Montbello falls to 5-1 and will host Monarch on Oct. 12 at 11:00 a.m.
