Former Chaparral High star Davonte' Neal leaves Notre Dame

Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly told reporters during his news conference Wednesday morning that wide receiver Davonte’ Neal is no longer part of the team.

Another receiver, Justin Ferguson, Kelly announced, was no longer there, as well.

Kelly did not give a reason for the departure.

“I’m not going to get into the specifics of it other than they’re no longer with us,” Kelly told reporters. “All I can say is when we break to start stretch and they’re not out there, they’re no longer on the roster.”

Neal played little on offense his freshman season, but he was the punt returner, returning 21 punts for 46 yards.

Neal, who was the Gatorade Arizona Football Player of the Year in 2010 and 2011, helping Scottsdale Chaparral to state titles those years, is expected to move back to the Valley. He has a six-week-old daughter who lives with her mother in the Valley.

Luke Neal, Davonte’s father, did not return messages.
