Fort Myers on pace to fourth straight district title in girls tennis

By

Fort Myers coach Ron Riis has his girls geared to win its fourth consecutive district title in a row with five girls advancing to the singles’ finals Thursday at Riverdale High.

With the boys setting the tone taking the lead Monday, No. 1 Thandiwe Kangwa, No. 2 Chandler Novoa, No. 3 Stephanie Chavez, No. 4 Alexandra Overdijking and No. 5 Daniella Andrade are all headed to the finals.

The Green Wave lost 12 games in Tuesday’s quarterfinal and semifinal matches at Riverdale.

“We played really well,” Riis said. “We only played two sets in each match and we are in the finals in all five singles matches. We are in the semifinals in both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.”

North Fort Myers put two girls in the finals, No. 2 Megan Sushil and No. 3 Bailey Harris.

Cape Coral No. 1 Melanie Allen, Ida Baker No. 4 Jeni Schumann and Riverdale No. 5 Olivia Hennings are the lone finalist for their respective schools.

Fort Myers finished with 12 points after day one of the district finals. The boys and girls finals will begin at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Riverdale.
