Come Saturday night, 30 state wrestling champions will be crowned at the Times Union Center in Albany.
Fourty-one Section 4 wrestlers hope to be among that group.
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association wrestling championships begin at 10 a.m. Friday. The two-day tournament concludes with the championship finals on Saturday, which are scheduled for 6.
Last year, four Section 4 wrestlers won state titles, Chenango Forks’ Kyle Kelly (Divison I 99-pound weight class), Marathon’s Lucas Malmberg (Division II 99), Greene’s Kyle Stanton (Division II 220) and Lansing’s Connor Lapresi (Division II 132). Kelly and Lapresi are back, with Kelly seeking a third state title as he attempts to secure the Divison I 113 title.
Seventeen Section 4 wrestlers are competing in the Division I tournament and 24 are competing in the Division II tournament. JC and Unatego have four wrestlers each competing in the state tournament, JC in Division I and Unatego in Division II.
Kelly is one of four Section 4 wrestlers to earn No. 1 seeds. The other are Johnson City’s Reggie Williams (Division I 195), Greene’s Christian Dietrich (Division II 170), and Lansing’s William Koll (Division II 126).
