Four local grapplers earn first-round triumphs

As the individual state wrestling tournament moves forward and the field gets smaller, competition gets tougher.

This was evident on Thursday as only six out of the 24 local wrestlers who advanced to The Palace of Auburn Hills for the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Individual Finals picked up wins.

Since there is a consolation bracket, no wrestlers were at risk of seeing their season end, but only a select few stayed in the hunt for an individual state championship with a win.

The Bronson Vikings, who advanced all the way to the Team Wrestling Division 4 state semifinals before falling to Hudson, led the area with seven representatives at The Palace, with four of them – Hunter Machus (125 pounds), Brandon Losinski (145 pounds), Dan Erwin (160 pounds) and Leo Mora (171 pounds) – getting wins.

Also in Division 4, Homer’s Tyler Prater (285 pounds) picked up a win.

The only city wrestler with a win on Thursday was Division 1 Lakeview’s Rodney Harvey, who improved his record to 54-2 on the year.

Wrestling action continues on Friday and Saturday at The Palace, with the finals expected to take place on Saturday at 4:45 p.m.

Thursday’s winners advance to the championship bracket and will wrestle in the quarterfinals on Friday at approximately 11:30 a.m., while the consolation bracket starts at 8:30 a.m. on Friday.
