Mary Trossi sank two free throws with 2.8 seconds remaining Saturday to help the third-seeded Franklin High School girls basketball team hold off a comeback attempt by second-seeded Bridgewater-Raritan and lift the Warriors to a 36-33 victory in the Somerset County Tournament semifinals at Montgomery High School.
Trossi and Alexandra Jackson finished with seven points apiece to lead a balanced offensive attack, while the Warriors used a defense to lead them into the final for the first time in their history. Franklin will be looking to avenge two regular-season losses to top-seeded Gill St. Bernard’s in the final at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bridgewater-Raritan.
The Warriors got off to a fast start behind six points from Tahirah Scott and led by as many as 11 early in the third quarter, but had their lead cut to one point four times during the fourth quarter.
Middlesex 60, Timothy Christian 45: Giana Guarino poured in 22 points and Tori Schweyher and Amanda Abate each chipped in 10 points to send Middlesex (14-7). Ashley Sullivan scored 20 points to pace the Tigers (18-5), while Michaela Csorny and Hannah Saquian each contributed 12 points.
South Plainfield 44, Bloomfield 37: Kate McLaughlin netted 18 points and Shannon McMahon added 10 as South Plainfield improved to 13-10.
Wall 57, East Brunswick 36: Dayna Sclafani scored 21 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out eight assists, but East Brunswick fell to 5-20.
