French, Lampe brothers help St. X keep the opposition down in wrestling tourney

Hunter French won the Most Outstanding Wrestler award and the Lampe brothers did their part as St. Xavier claimed victory in the KHSAA Region 4 Tournament at Trinity on Friday night.

St. X finished with 255 points, well ahead of second-place Trinity’s 218. The Shamrocks edged Moore, which totaled 217 points. Central was fourth with 162.

Justin Lampe pinned Cody Webb of Trinity to win the 145-pound class, then brother Dominic pinned Clayton Smith of Trinity to win the 152-pound division. They were two of six St. X wrestlers who were champions in the 14 weight classes.

The top four in each weight class advanced to the state finals. St. X had one wrestler in each class make the semifinals.

“I felt really good about the semifinals,” Tigers coach James Kraeszig said. “In the finals we got the matches. Now we go back and look to improve upon today. I think we can come out and wrestle well in the state tournament now after today.”

For French, it was a hard-fought and well-deserved honor, though you’d be hard-pressed to get him to admit it.

“It was a very, very close match,” he said. “Gave me a bit of a heart attack there. It’s always nice to win an overtime match, but you’ve always got to put that extra heart into it. But on the other hand, you feel like you don’t deserve (Most Outstanding Wrestler) because other guys pinned their opponents out there and they don’t get the recognition.”

A.J. Bindner got things rolling for the Tigers by defeating Toby Siddens of Moore by technical fall 16-1 in the 106-pound weight class. After the Lampe brothers won back-to-back matches, French won the 160-pound class with a tough 3-2 decision over Mikey Smith of Moore. Noah Bauer and Brandon Pledger then won the 170- and 182-pound divisions for St. X.

Trinity won four divisions. Keegan Duncan took the 120-pound class, Hudson Heidorf took the 126 division, Ian Kahl won 138 and Bobby Bryant 285.

Moore was able to win three weight classes. Jason Hall won at 113 pounds, Jesus Rosado at 132 and Justin McDaniel at 195.

Anthony Hamblin won the 220-pound division for Central, the only class not won by St. X, Trinity or Moore.
