Riverdale recorded its first win of the season behind the power running of Van Edwards.
LaBelle (2-5) went into the game without starting quarterback A.J. Ayala, who suffered a high ankle sprain during gym class earlier in the week.
The Raiders (1-4) went into the game with a new head coach as Riverdale athletic director Tom Roszell took over those duties this week with Rob Hinson staying on as defensive coordinator.
Two big plays early propelled Riverdale to a lead it would never relinquish.
On the Raiders first possession, Edwards sprinted 57 yards for a score. On Riverdale’s second possession, Jesse Lighthill lobbed a touchdown toss to Ryan Pulley, who raced 74 yards for a touchdown.
Roszell didn’t want to talk about the coaching change but talked about the fast start. “We put this offense in this week and I’m really proud of the kids,” he said
Edwards finished with four touchdowns and 156 yards on 13 carries.
LaBelle got its only score from freshman quarterback Michael Lopez on a 5-yard scramble.
Despite the setback, LaBelle coach Gary Siner was proud of his team, “We had a couple of chances to make some plays early on, but we chose not to.”
Roszell said he’ll savor the team’s first win. “We’ve been having some real difficult times, we’ve got a very young football team and we’re going through some growing pains.”
