FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL: Morris Hills shuts out Chatham

Morris Hills senior Jose Delgado went out with a bang in his final regular-season game.

The running back rushed for 135 yards, scored all four of his team’s touchdowns, and intercepted a pass on the way to a 27-0 Morris Hills victory over Chatham in an NJAC independent game Saturday. It was the Scarlet Knights’ fourth straight win.

“He is such a great kid and he really had a great year,” coach Mike Sabo said. “He’s rushed for 850 yards and now has 11 touchdowns. He is not the kind of kid who’ll break off long runs for 50 or 60 yards. He is more of a grinder and I couldn’t be more proud of him. Today’s game is indicative of the kind of season and career he has had for us.”

Delgado led off the scoring by hauling in a 10-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Daymon Fleming (4 for 6 passing for 50 yards).

Delgado (3 catches, 25 yards) added touchdowns runs of 1, 1, and 10 yards — one in each of the remaining three quarters — as the Scarlet Knights improved to 5-4.

“Delgado is a very good player and someone all the coaches have really enjoyed working with,” Sabo said.

Defenders Ryan Jackson and Steven Acevedo enjoyed big games for Morris Hills. Jackson had six tackles, including one for a loss, and had one sack. Acevedo had seven tackles and two sacks as Morris Hills concluded its third straight winning season.

“The kids have really rebounded well,” Sabo said. “We started out 1-4 and we were playing Mount Olive, and guys like Joe Bencil, Delgado, and Acevedo wouldn’t let us lose. Those guys kept things together in the locker room and we have won four straight since. They have played together since they were little and it’s nice to see them end up winners.

“When you’re 1-4, sometimes you can wind up going in the opposite direction,” Sabo said. “But they kept the locker room together. Our new defensive coordinator, Keith Heinemann, has done a nice job. We gave up 42 points in our first game and have gotten a lot better since then. He’s really turned that group around. I’m just so happy for our kids because not all teams can turn it around after starting out 1-4.”

Chatham finished the regular season 0-9.
