JOHNSTON, Ia. — Pitchers Joe Hawks and Alex McCune combined to throw a two-hit shutout of Roosevelt as Johnston advanced meet the Dowling-Southeast Polk winner in the Substate 8 final Wednesday. Hawks and Nick Stitzell each had two hits for the Dragons.
East 26, North 0
Robert Hansen, Colby Carmichael and Chino Alcala all hit home runs in the first inning. Colby Carmichael threw a no-hitter for the Scarlets, who face the winner of Valley-Roosevelt in the Substate 7 final on Wednesday.
Waukee 6, Ames 1
Austin Battaglia had a solo home run in the third for Waukee. Mick Price also hit a two-run homer in the third. Sophomore Malik Moore was the winning pitcher for the Warriors, who meet Fort Dodge on Monday in the Substate 2 semifinal.
Dowling Catholic 13, Newton 2
Scotty Tigner went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a double for Dowling. Nate Hunter batted 2-for-4 with a three-run home run. Jake Lewton scored two runs with three hits for the Maroons. Jake Reinhardt was the winning pitcher for Dowling, which faces Southeast Polk on Monday in the Substate 8 semifinal.

Class 3-A district semifinals

Dallas Center-Grimes 7, Bondurant-Farrar 2
DALLAS CENTER, Ia. — Mustangs senior pitcher Jake Lewis allowed just four hits in a seven-inning win. Michael Foggia added three hits, including a two-run triple, for Dallas Center-Grimes.
