THE WINNER: Matt Welch

THE BASICS

School: Proctor (Minn.)
Grade: Senior
Height: 6-foot

Athletic achievement: He raced to a Class A individual state championship this past season with a time of 15:34. A two-time First Team All-State selection, Proctor earned seventh place at the Nike Cross Nationals Heartland Regional championships, crossing the line in 15:37.1. He also earned 99th place at the Foot Locker Midwest Regional championships in 16:10.

Academic excellence: Welch has maintained a 4.0 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: A talented trumpet and French horn player, he has volunteered locally on behalf of his school’s peer leadership program.

THE PRAISE

“Matt Welch is a tremendous competitor and a wonderful ambassador to the sport and his school,” said Proctor head coach Lowell Harnell. “He is extremely focused on what he sets out to accomplish.”

THE FUTURE: Welch remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.
