Generals win first game in pool play


The Newark Generals came away with a 4-0 win against Butler County in the first game of pool play at the state club tournament Friday, getting two first-period goals at Northland.

Newark was led by Ben Dennis’ two goals and an assist. Tate Stewart and Jake Hoffmann each had a goal and an assist and Alex O’Neill, Gabe Parini and Taylor Blome each had assists.

Austin Pitcock had 10 saves.

Newark is the No. 2 seed from Columbus and Butler County is the No. 4 seed from Cincinnati. The Generals got five points in the win, winning the game and all three periods. The team with the most points at the end of pool play will advance to a semifinal.

Newark plays at 10 a.m. today against Medina — the No. 1 seed from Cleveland — at the Cincinnati Gardens, then play Jackson at 7 p.m. at Northland.
