Genoa had two wrestlers in the same weight class at the USA Wrestling State Championships at Elyria on Saturday and Sunday.
Junior heavyweight Cody Buckner pinned Antonio Zapata (Oregon Clay) in the finals to finish runner-up in the Freestyle/Greco Roman format. Sophomore heavyweight Louis Cutchall earned a technical fall over Adam Notestine (Beavercreek) in the finals to capture all-state honors for third.
“Few teams are able to place three wrestlers,” Comets coach Bob Bergman said of the championships. “Even fewer teams are able to place two wrestlers in the same weight class. Genoa can make the argument of having two of the best heavyweight wrestlers in the state.”
Buckner was 32-9 last season and qualified to the state tournament. Cutchall, who finished 14-5 last season, alternated matches with Buckner.
Cutchall was first at the Northwest Regional Qualifier at Clay in April and second at the Northeast Regional Qualifier.
Genoa senior Max Reeder fell to Trey Grine of Fremont Ross by decision to finish runner-up in the Greco Roman championships. Reeder’s showing earned him a spot to compete at the Junior & Cadet National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota this summer.
Reeder was 55-9 last season and qualified to Columbus. He pinned Josh Bostic (Massilon Jackson) in 1 minute, 30 seconds to advance to the Greco Roman finals.
Damian D’Emilio, Brandon Bates, TJ Baker, Dakota Sparks and Jay Nino also qualified to the Elyria tournament.
Nearly 24 Comets train twice weekly at the Lake Erie Wrestling Club at Clay under coach Troy McLaughlin. More than 80 of the area’s top wrestlers train with McLaughlin.
